Tournament Showdown – Movie Comedies (Second Round – VOTE Now!)

In case you missed the original reason behind this tournament, click here.

The second half of the first round voting is over, with a few more upsets including the #11 seed Napoleon Dynamite, #14 Stripes and in a very close call, #15 Wedding Crashers lose a squeaker to Dumb & Dumber.  A lot of first round blowouts too as five movies won with at least 85% of the vote, including #39 seed Ferris Bueller’s Day Off who could have taken several days off by winning 97% of the vote against Good Morning Vietnam.

And sadly, my faith in the readers has been shattered with the terrible first round loss of Monty Python and the Holy Grail as it loses to American Pie – it’s a sad day here.  Well at least if the Holy Grail has to be eliminated, let it at least go out in style.  RUN AWAY!!!!!!

So now it’s time to vote for the second round for the funniest movie of all-time* and again your votes will determine a winner.  Take a few seconds to look over the matchups and vote for your choice in each to advance to the sweet sixteen.  Voting for the second round is open until Saturday night 10pm (est), with voting for the sweet sixteen to be opened immediately after.

Here’s a quick look at the first round results…

And now the second round...

(1) Animal House vs. (32) What About Bob?

MY VOTE: Animal House - maybe fat, drunk and stupid IS a way to go through life.  If nothing else, Bill Murray taught me the proper way to eat corn on the cob.  Mmmmmm, mmmmmm, mmmmmmm.

(17) Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure vs. (49) Trading Places

MY VOTE: Trading Places - tough choice here, but ultimately it comes down to actually trading places.  Would I rather watch Eddie Murphy as Ted Logan or watch Keanu Reeves as Billy Ray Valentine?  Actually, neither now that I think about it.  I'm just a big fan of frozen orange juice.

(8) Blazing Saddles vs. (25) Beetlejuice

MY VOTE: Beetlejuice - I'm not sure this will be the popular vote, but for third grade, I dressed up as Alec Baldwin's character for Halloween.  No joking aside.

(9) Pee Wee's Big Adventure vs. (24) Clerks

MY VOTE: Pee Wee's Big Adventure - as I wrote in the first round, I'm not a big fan of Clerks, so this was an easy choice.  I'd rather remember the Alamo than remember the Quickstop.

(5) Airplane! vs. (37) National Lampoon's Vacation

MY VOTE: Airplane! - since we're choosing between planes and automobiles, I want to take this brief opportunity to apologize for a lack of Planes, Trains and Automobiles in the Top 100 (shame on you Bravo!) Even though I've never been in a turkish prison or never watched gladiator movies, I'll choose the not-so-friendly skies for this matchup.

(12) Fast Times at Ridgemont High vs. (21) 40-Year Old Virgin

MY VOTE: 40-Year Old Virgin - I believe this is the only first round matchup where I got both winners incorrect in my picks.  So I'm hoping for an old-school WWF-style double count out here where both wrestlers decide to fight outside the ring and neither gets back before the 10 count.  But since I have to choose, I'll take the Virgin since I was duped by wrestling being fake when I saw Fast Times for the first time in the late 80s.

(36) The Princess Bride vs. (61) Happy Gilmore

MY VOTE: Happy Gilmore - I stand correct, I picked these two wrong in the first round as well, but it was tough to vote against them as they're both funny movies.  I'll take the movie that's more comedy than love story here.  Also, did you know that the female lead in Happy Gilmore is played by Julie Bowen (of Lost and Modern Family fame)?

(13) Old School vs. (45) Office Space

MY VOTE: Old School - tough one here, as this is where the late 90s clashes with the early 00s, but I'll side with Ferrell/Wilson/Vaughn trio over the Peter/Michael Bolton/Nag, naga, not gonna advance to the next round.

(6) Ace Ventura: Pet Detective vs. (38) Meet the Parents

MY VOTE: Meet the Parents - good solid matchup with both Carrey and Stiller at the best of their games.  But it comes down to two things, 1) a male nurse is funnier than a pet detective, and 2) I still can't see Mums champagne without saying "you can get a whole bunch of Mums" (thanks Judah Friedlander).

(22) The Big Lebowski vs. (54) Zoolander

MY VOTE:  The Big Lebowski - that's enough Ben Stiller.  You're not that funny.  Besides, Lebowski was the first, last and only respectable thing Tara Reid has done in her entire life.  Let's at least advance her another round just on that basis.

(3) There's Something About Mary vs. (35) American Pie

MY VOTE: There's Something About Mary - it's saddens me to know that this should have been Monty Python.  It also saddens me to know it's another Ben Stiller movie in this mix.  I guess Bravo is a big fan of his, I'm surprised that Mystery Men didn't make the list.

(19) Wayne's World vs. (51) Ghostbusters

MY VOTE: Ghostbusters - very close call here.  You've got Bill Murray up against his brother Brian Doyle Murray (Noah's Arcade).  For what it's worth, I do think Wayne's World 2 is funnier than Ghostbusters 2, but for the originals, I give the slight edge to the movie that's got an awesome theme song performed by Ray Parker Jr.

(7) The Wedding Singer vs. (39) Ferris Bueller's Day Off

MY VOTE: The Wedding Singer - my least favorite actress (Drew Barrymore) vs. my least favorite actor (Matthew Broderick), yikes, how do I choose?  Oh, actually this is easy, Matthew Broderick is married to my least favorite face that looks like a leather shoe.

(10) Naked Gun vs. (23) Groundhog Day

MY VOTE: Naked Gun - yes, sadly I'm picking against the Groundhog on its holy day.  Besides, what's funnier than seeing O.J. Simpson before his murdering days?  Not Andie McDowell that's for certain.  Although she was pretty terrible in Bad Girls, a very terrible movie that I sat through as a young teen with high hopes, only to have them dashed by Madeline Stowe, Drew Barrymore and Mary Stuart Masterston.  Not really a good recipe for puberty.

(2) Caddyshack vs. (31) Austin Powers

MY VOTE: Caddyshack - wow, this is a big generational matchup.  I think people in the 25-35 range were brought up on the Austin Powers era, while 40-50 are the Caddyshack crowd.  I'm stepping outside my peer group and going for the movie that I was 1-year old when it came out to theaters.  But I would not be surprised to see the #2 seed fall here in a big upset.  Kind of like how Cincinnati always lost in the second round of the big tournament when they were seeded high.

(47) Kingpin vs. (50) Dumb and Dumber

MY VOTE: Dumb and Dumber - the Farrelly Brothers clash!!!  Ironically these were their first two movies, and while both are hilariously entertaining throughout, I'll choose their debut movie easily.  Also, thanks to the several of you who pointed out that Kingpin is not two words as I originally listed them.  If I can't spell it correctly, it shouldn't advance.

Final second round results coming Saturday. Feel free to weigh in on any matchups, I can be persuaded with compelling arguments. No point shaving here though.
