And now the next round…

SWEET SIXTEEN MATCHUPS

(1) Animal House vs. (49) Trading Places

MY VOTE: Animal House – tough opponent for the frat boys, but as the great Bluto would say, “was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?”  Not really sure how that plays into matchup, but nevertheless the top seed moves on for me.

(8) Blazing Saddles vs. (24) Clerks

MY VOTE: Clerks – every year for March Madness, Michigan St. always goes farther than they think I will and that angers me.  Then when I pick them to do well, they lose in the first round.  Why am I telling you this?  Because Clerks beating both Young Frankenstein and Pee Wee’s Big Adventure has angered me as well.  So now I’m going to pick this movie to do well in hopes that they lose.  Sadly I thought I’d never pick again on emotion after nailing my Super Bowl prediction, but Clerks must be stopped.

(5) Airplane! vs. (21) 40-Year Old Virgin

MY VOTE: Airplane! – This is going to be a very interesting matchup that sadly I can see going either way.  It shouldn’t, because Airplane is the absolute definition of classic slapstick humor, while Virgin is more of the modern, let’s use sex as a joke, movie.  Not to say that Steve Carrell’s break-out movie isn’t funny, it is, but having to choose between the two movies is easier than deciding between the chicken or the fish on that Airplane! flight.

(13) Old School vs. (61) Happy Gilmore

MY VOTE: Old School – another tough one here, but I think we’re at the point now where Adam Sandler’s comedy career should bow out of the Sweet Sixteen since he hasn’t really done anything funny in over a decade.  Old School goes streaking into the Elite Eight!

(22) The Big Lebowski vs. (38) Meet the Parents

MY VOTE: Meet the Parents – it pains me to vote against The Dude, but even though Lebowski is in my top five favorite movies of all-time, if I had to pick one based on which is funnier, I’m going to give the slight edge to Parents.  I feel terrible, is it too late to change my vote?

(3) There’s Something About Mary vs. (51) Ghostbusters

MY VOTE: There’s Something About Mary – my only regret about the Vikings losing to the Saints was that we wouldn’t get the inevitable clip of someone asking Brett Fav-ruh during Media Week what he was doing in Miami, just so he could say “I’m in town to play the Colts, you dumbass.”

(10) Naked Gun vs. (39) Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

MY VOTE: Naked Gun – the first five minutes of Naked Gun is funnier than all of Ferris.  Actually I’ll take any five minute section of Naked and compare it up against all of Ferris. That includes the ending credits too.

(2) Caddyshack vs. (50) Dumb and Dumber

MY VOTE: Dumb and Dumber – save the best for laugh (last).  This would be the primetime slot if it was aired on TV.  It’s a shame that one of these two has to bow out this early.  I give the edge to Dumb, because even though both of these great movies spawned absolutely terrible sequels, I was lucky enough to not see Dumb and Dumberer or whatever it was called.

Feel free to weigh in on any matchups, voting is open until Monday.

  1. Hey Jarrett, just so we’re clear, just because you were lucky enough to avoid Dumb and Dumberer doesn’t mean it didn’t happen, and trust me, if you thought Caddyshack II was an abomination….
