Tournament Showdown – Movie Comedies (Finals – VOTE NOW!)

The finals are set, and say what you will about Bravo’s terrible list of movies, but it’s going to be #1 vs. #2 for the first time ever in Tournament Showdown history.  Granted, this is the first showdown, but still didn’t expect to have the top two face off this soon.

Unfortunately we must say goodbye to two classic comedies, as both Airplane! and There’s Something About Mary both got tripped up in the Final Four and will have to settle for playing for the bronze.

Here’s the recap of the previous round…

FINAL FOUR RESULTS (with percentage of overall vote listed after the winner)

(1) Animal House – 67% def. (5) Airplane!

(2) Caddyshack – 57% def. (3) There’s Something About Mary

So now it’s time to vote in the Finals (and Consolation) for the funniest movie of all-time and again your votes will determine a winner. Take a few seconds to look over the matchups and vote for your choice to be declared the FUNNIEST MOVIE OF ALL-TIME.  Voting for this round is open until next Sunday night 10pm (est).

Pop the popcorn, turn down the lights and let’s decide together which movies make us laugh the most.

And now the finals!!!

CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH

(1) Animal House vs. (2) Caddyshack

MY VOTE: Caddyshack – I was hoping Airplane! would have been here, but if you’re asking me to choose between these two classic, both from around the same era, it’s an almost no-brainer to me.  I’ve said enough about these two laugh out loud films, so now it’s up to you to make the final call.  Good luck to both competitors.

CONSOLATION MATCH

(3) There’s Something About Mary vs. (5) Airplane!

MY VOTE: Airplane! – a good undercard bout, as you’ve got a film catered to two different generations with the same sense of humor.  However, Airplane was my favorite going in to the tournament.

Happy voting!

Tournament Showdown – Movie Comedies (Final Four – VOTE NOW!)

The final four is set, and it’s three oldies and a fourth movie that can be considered new compared to the others even though it’s over 10 years old.

With the elite eight voting is over only four movies remain in their quest to be called the Funniest Movie of All-Time. Four of the top five overall seeds of the tournament, #1 Animal House, #2 Caddyshack, #3 There’s Something About Mary and #5 Airplane! all advanced to the semifinals. All but Caddyshack won easily, as the second overall barely escaped upset at the hands of the 10 seed The Naked Gun, thus robbing us of a potential all-Zucker final.

Here’s the recap of the previous round…

ELITE EIGHT RESULTS (with percentage of overall vote listed after the winner)

(1) Animal House – 69% def. (8) Blazing Saddles
(5) Airplane! – 56% def. (13) Old School

(3) There’s Something About Mary – 85% def. (38) Meet the Parents
(2) Caddyshack – 52% def. (10) Naked Gun Series

So now it’s time to vote in the Final Four the funniest movie of all-time and again your votes will determine a winner. Take a few seconds to look over the matchups and vote for your choice in each to advance to the finals. Voting for this round is open until Sunday night 10pm (est), with voting for the final four to be opened immediately afterwards.

The sweet sixteen voting is over and only eight movies remain in their quest to be called the Funniest Movie of All-Time.  The last round produced some of the closest results as movies like Caddyshack and Naked Gun just barely escaping being upset, while top seed Animal House and #3 seed There’s Something About Mary continue to dominate the competition.  Here’s a recap of the previous round…

SWEET SIXTEEN RESULTS (with percentage of overall vote listed after the winner)

(1) Animal House – 83% def. (49) Trading Places
(8) Blazing Saddles – 66% def. (24) Clerks

Tournament Showdown – Movie Comedies (Sweet Sixteen – VOTE NOW!)

Sorry for the delay, my laptop got buried under 30 inches of snow.

The second round voting is over and only sixteen movies remain in their quest to be called the Funniest Movie of All-Time. So before I get trapped behind another 20 inches of snow, let’s recap the second round results…

(49) Trading Places – 63% def. (17) Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure

Tournament Showdown – Movie Comedies (Second Round – VOTE Now!)

In case you missed the original reason behind this tournament, click here.

The second half of the first round voting is over, with a few more upsets including the #11 seed Napoleon Dynamite, #14 Stripes and in a very close call, #15 Wedding Crashers lose a squeaker to Dumb & Dumber.  A lot of first round blowouts too as five movies won with at least 85% of the vote, including #39 seed Ferris Bueller’s Day Off who could have taken several days off by winning 97% of the vote against Good Morning Vietnam.

And sadly, my faith in the readers has been shattered with the terrible first round loss of Monty Python and the Holy Grail as it loses to American Pie – it’s a sad day here.  Well at least if the Holy Grail has to be eliminated, let it at least go out in style.  RUN AWAY!!!!!!

So now it’s time to vote for the second round for the funniest movie of all-time* and again your votes will determine a winner.  Take a few seconds to look over the matchups and vote for your choice in each to advance to the sweet sixteen.  Voting for the second round is open until Saturday night 10pm (est), with voting for the sweet sixteen to be opened immediately after.

Here’s a quick look at the first round results… Continue reading

Tournament Showdown – Movie Comedies

I’m not sure how or why, but I got emailed a list of the Top 100 comedies of all-time as put together by Bravo. So, either out of sheer boredom, or because it’s really fun to do, I’ve decided to have a 64-movie tournament to decide the funniest movie of all-time (at least according to Bravo’s top 100). Movies will be seeded based on Bravo’s rankings and will be judged on your votes and mine, which include several factors; laugh-out-loud moments, memorable/quotable lines, re-watchability, and coin toss if none of the other factors help pick a winner.

Now before I begin, I should mention that upon further research, this list was compiled in 2006, which makes it even stranger that it wound up in my mailbox. So this list will not have any of the great comedies of the past 3 years, such as, The Hangover, Tropic Thunder, Pineapple Express, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Step Brothers, Little Miss Sunshine and Borat. Also, this apparently was a TV special where they showed clips and did a countdown, so it wasn’t just a random list posted on their website.

Also, this is Bravo’s list, not mine, and there are some definite omissions to the list that warrant mentioning. Let’s bow our heads and acknowledge these forgotten favorites: The Money Pit, Planes Traines and Automobiles, Liar Liar, Orange County, Home Alone, Spaceballs, Coming To America, Hot Shots, Tommy Boy and Billy Madison. Wow, actually I could probably make a list of Top 100 comedies that aren’t on Bravo’s list. Hmm, possible future blog?  With all those great comedies missing from the list, I wonder if that explains why Bravo has since removed the list from their website.

Here’s the Top 100 list according to the people at Bravo who have all since been fired for putting together such a terrible list and not knowing what true funny movies are.

Let’s see who makes the field of 64. Continue reading
